The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation…This is where it all started, where Mama Ninfa first stuffed chargrilled sliced beef into a handmade flour tortilla and launched the national fajita craze.

The Original Ninfa’s was created by “Mama” Ninfa Laurenzo in 1973 after the death of her husband, John. She started by grilling skirt steak and serving it in tortillas from her family’s struggling tortilla factory with various toppings and salsas. The resulting dish – “Tacos al Carbon” (now usually known as just “Fajitas”) was a major milestone in the history of Tex-Mex cuisine.

Mama Ninfa passed away in 2001, and since 2005, Legacy Restaurants has operated The Original Ninfa’s. The Legacy team and Executive Chef Alex Padilla have updated, and continuously made improvements. In 2019, The Original Ninfa’s opened a second location at 1700 Post Oak Boulevard in the heart of the Uptown/Galleria area of Houston.

The Original Ninfa’s is more popular than ever and still serves “The Best Mexican Food in Texas Since Texas was in Mexico!™” It has been featured numerous times on Food Network, including “Top 5 Restaurants: Best Mexican Food”, “Top 5: Tex Mex Faves”, and “Old School: Best Thing I Ever Ate”.

The Original Ninfa’s was named “Best Restaurant in Texas” by Southern Living in 2017 and was a James Beard National award nominee in 2019

In 1962, Jalal Antone, the family patriarch, opened Antone’s Import Company, a market on Taft Street in Houston catering primarily to South Asian and Latino immigrants and the local “foodie” community. In the mid-1970s, he introduced his line of unique and original “Houston po’ boys”. Initially sold only in the company’s retail stores, in the early 1980s, Mr. Antone’s daughter, Mary Jo Antone, began the distribution and sale of Antone’s Po’ boys in Randall’s Supermarkets and Rice Epicurean stores throughout Houston.

Legacy Restaurants assumed control of Antone’s in 2006. Today, two, lively and popular Antone’s full-service sandwich shops remain in operation. More than five decades since its inception in Houston and under the leadership of CEO and Partner, Craig Lieberman, Antone’s has evolved into a producer of fresh, handmade po’ boys “Proudly Made in Texas, USA” and distributed throughout much of Texas.

The distinctive po’ boys with their color-coded labeling system and white, butcher paper wrappers, can be found throughout Austin/Central Texas and the Dallas-Fort Worth area, in addition to their hometown of Houston. Venues offering Antone’s Po’ boy‘s include H-E-B, Kroger, Randall’s, Tom Thumb and Market Street, plus Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and Texas Children’s, MD Anderson, and Memorial-Herman Hospitals, as well as various sports facilities at the University of Texas-Austin, Texas A&M-College Station and Baylor University.

The Antone‘s family made another contribution to Texas through the efforts of Clifford Antone, our founders nephew, who created Antone’s Night Club, Austin‘s beloved “Home of the Blues” (and the only blues club in Texas where Antone’s Po’ boy‘s are available).
